An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was on the client’s minds as they approached the topic of supporting an aging family member.

Through the design process, we worked out an ADU solution on the ground floor that would provide a safe and comfortable living environment while being able to expand the livable space of the primary residence on the second floor.

Accessibility standards were used when designing the ADU space to ensure that the space would function well if mobility declined.

Upstairs, the a new primary suite and additional family room space give the client’s young boys space to grow.

DESIGN CHALLENGE

Designing an addition that enhanced the existing split-level home. The home had previously had a garage addition that was re-worked to ensure the garage frontage did not dominate the house.
